Many movies would show this is a family project, with everyone from the youngest to the oldest member of the family participating. They had fun working together and a great sense of accomplishment when the dog house was completed for their favorite dog.

This can still be a great project for the family. Each member can share what they think is important for this dog house to have.  Your children will probably surprise you with their insight into what is important for their pet.

It is assumed that you will use dog house  plans to build it yourself or have it built.  First, before you can proceed any further with this project, decisions must be made about the following items.

Location

Where are you going to locate the dog house?  Your dog needs to be able to get in and out of it easily.  Also, the opening needs to be protected from wind and rain.

Size

Size of your pet’s house. Your dog should be comfortable when he stands up, turns around or lays.  Remember, this is your pet’s retreat from your hectic world.

Building Materials

Building materials used in its construction. Normally, when we think of a dog house, we think of wood.  That is probably everyone’s preference, but there are also other building materials available.

When we think of Building a Dog House out of wood, some pictures come to mind.  They are measuring and cutting the wooden pieces.  Years ago, they were put together with nails–so we immediately picture using a hammer to pound the nails into place.  Nowadays, that is not always the case.  We have many electric and air tools as well as our handy hammer to do this job.

Entrance and Exit

Another very important feature when you build a dog house for your pet is the entrance and exit. Although we immediately think this opening should be in the center of one end (front), but that is not necessarily so.  Actually, if the opening is to one side of the center, it will afford more protection from the elements.

The size of the opening for your pet to enter and exit his house will depend on the size of your dog. Your dog should be able to enter and exit easily without scrunching up his body to do so.

Style

Now, let’s consider the style of the dog house.  There are many choices.  Is there a style that you feel blends with house or landscape?

Additional Features

Before you build a dog house discuss any additional features that would be beneficial to your pet’s comfort or make it easier to keep it clean and dry.

These items must be discussed and decided.  After this is accomplished, acquire your plans and proceed with your project to build a dog house for your pet.
