Prevent Problems

When firewood is laying on the ground, it can become wet or damp, moldy and rotten.  When this has happened, you usually get dirty carrying wood to the fireplace area. You may have a continuous chore of keeping the area around the fireplace clean, because the bark falls off easily.

Damp wood will not burn well. Also, it is difficult to get the fire started.  Once it is started the wood doesn’t want to stay burning.

Stack Firewood

Firewood should always be stacked so that it is not touching the ground.  This will prevent the lower levels of wood from becoming damp.  Also, it should be stacked so that the ends of wood are exposed and the air can circulate around the ends.  Then the wood should dry properly.

Cover Firewood

Another factor in proper firewood storage is a cover. A cover will protect your wood from the weather elements, such as rain and snow.  Once it is dry, you want to keep it that way until you are ready to burn it.

Since we needed it quickly, we bought a metal outdoor storage kit.  And we quickly erected it, and it has served us well.

However, we would have preferred a wooden storage shed.

Since then we have observed many unique, eye appealing outdoor storage buildings in local neighborhoods, suburbs and rural areas.  Some blend into their surroundings so well that you don’t see them at first glance.

We have researched the subject of storage sheds and have put together this little website.

When you first think of an Outdoor Storage Shed, in your mind you probably picture a very basic one-story, stand-alone building which had been placed somewhere on the property for storage.

But that may not be a true picture.  Most Outdoor Storage Sheds can have eye appeal, are very interesting and not simply utilitarian storage buildings.

Whether walking in city neighborhoods or driving in the city or country, you will discover many examples of Sheds built for a specific storage purpose.  They will vary in size, style, and construction material. Sometimes they blend in with their surroundings so well that you may not see them at first glance.

Their architecture is dictated by many factors. The purpose for which they were constructed. The weather in their locale. Space available for a storage facility.  Materials readily available for construction.  And whether it is a diy project, a kit or a building contractor project.

You may not necessarily find the same types of Outdoor Storage Sheds in the southern USA as in the northern USA.  Rural farm areas will have different needs than city residential areas.

Even the same type of building may be called a different name in the land of many lakes than it is in bayou country.

So you are thinking of building a shed.  There are several ways to go about it.  You could purchase a kit, do it yourself with plans, or have a contractor erect it for you.

About a decade ago we found ourselves in desperate need of an Outdoor Storage Shed. Our garage was so full that it was overflowing with yard equipment and tools.  We could not park our van inside because there was no room for it. Also, winter was fast approaching.

We were extremely busy and required a quick solution to this problem.  We decided on a metal shed, choosing a size that would meet our needs, fit into the space available for it, and easy to use.

Although every part was labeled and had good instructions and diagrams, we worked diligently to erect our shed.  As I recall, we first had to make a level wooden foundation (following the instructions provided) before anything else could be done.

The box that the shed unit came in was too large for our van.  So we had it delivered by the home improvement center where we purchased it.  Also, we had the materials for the wooden foundation (plywood, etc.) delivered at the same time.

We first opened the box containing the shed unit or kit, checked that all parts were there, and then read the directions carefully. As I remember, there are dozens of screws needed to assemble it.

Our Metal Storage Shed was modest size, only 6 X 8.  We worked two full days erecting our storage shed.

This is a picture of our Metal Storage Shed.  It still looks pretty much like it did when we first erected it in our backyard. Evidently we did a good job.

One problem with a metal shed is that if you accidentally bump it with a lawn mower or other equipment you could put a dent in it. Fortunately, we have not had any major mishaps with our lawn mower or other equipment.  So, we have not had to try to remove any dents.

If you need that extra storage space, do not hesitate to check out a Metal Storage Shed even though it requires assembly.  It could give you many years of service.

Outside Features: You could even change a few of its features too. What color would you like to paint it? It would not be difficult to add a porch, a ramp, steps, or interesting trim.

Inside Features: What about the insides of wooden buildings? You may need shelves now for a certain purpose. Later you may need to change those same shelves. Maybe their size needs to be shortened, lengthened, deeper. You could easily make these changes.

Renewable Energy Source: Since wood is a renewable energy source, constructing your storage shed with wood helps the environment. Many timber companies replant trees when they harvest the lumber from a forest.

Easy to repair: If a wooden building has been damaged, it can be repaired easily. No need to tear down the whole building to replace a section. Years ago a couple of boards had been damaged on our wooden garage; they were easy to repair.

All in all, wood appears to be an excellent choice to use in constructing any of your outdoor storage buildings.

You need plans with instructions, diagrams, material lists before beginning to construct your wooden storage sheds.

On our neighborhood walks we have discovered unique wooden storage buildings. Sometimes it is their size, trim on the windows or doors, style, roof, color of paint. Other times it is the placement of the building so that it blends in with the landscape and other buildings. You do not realize it is a separate building.
